Desktops and Netbooks
Until recently, Linux and open source on the desktop have been used primarily by developers and open source fans. With the launch of netbooks over the past year, millions of people have started using Linux. Come learn the best ways to use Linux on the desktop, to maintain it in your company and choose the best applications to use.
Open source software that runs your business is the theme of this track, covering application servers, databases, Web servers, IT management tools, scalability tools, application development platforms and all other “middleware” that allows increasing numbers of companies to “run on open source.”
From desktop applications to online services to virtualized environments to legacy client-server operations, the data center has become a headache for IT operations teams. This track will give IT employees a heads up on what open source trends have in store and what open source solutions currently exist — monitoring, provisioning, business intelligence, compliance or cloud platform solutions. Hear from leading IT managers about how you can tap into these rich open source resources.
In today’s dynamic IT marketplace, open source is not confined to the enterprise server room; it spans from small companies to large, from servers to desktops to mobile devices and beyond. Of particular interest to both IT professionals and end-users is the impact of open source on mobile devices — phones, MIDs and other portable devices — and the infrastructure that supports those devices. This track will offer perspectives on open source mobile software platforms — Linux-based Android, LiMo, Moblin and WebOS, as well as SymbianOS and other OSs — and insights into building applications to run on them in the evolving end-to-end open source ecosystem.
You’ve got root, you’re the administrator and its your responsibility to keep it that way. This track is about helping you maintain secure control of your network and systems. All aspects of the job are covered from administrative best practices, perimeter protection and software/data security, to what to do after an incident with data recovery and forensics. The best part is that it’s all accomplished via open source technologies.
This track will focus on the practice of preventative maintenance and troubleshooting for FOSS systems. Recovering from outages is important. Come and learn about how to best deal with emergencies and the best practices to avoid outages and emergencies in the first place. This track will cover topics at both the operating system level and the application level.
